I just got back from an amazing trip to Edinburgh, Scotland (google “Royal Military Tattoo” if you’re interested in going sometime) for our annual coaches conference, and I thought I’d take a minute to share some of my learnings.  When I go to these conferences I always try to spend time with the Top Performers to learn what it is they are doing to excel at such high levels.  One of these Top Performers is my own coach, so I already know some of his secrets, and I wanted to learn from the others as well.

As it turned out, there were very few secrets to share, and it really wasn’t a surprise, although it might have been a little disappointing.  You see, we all secretly wish that there is some magic formula that other high performers know that we don’t.  We wish that they just have some magical power or secret sauce that if we could just get the recipe, we too could be a Peak Performer.

No, what I learned is that 95% of the Top Performers (there were a couple who had truly innovated and created their own secret sauce) simply were better at executing their business plans than I have been, and their business plans were not all that different than mine either.  Turns out that all these concepts I have been teaching my clients to grow their businesses for 15 years work for a coaching business as well!  Who knew?

Well, I did actually, and this was a great reminder (again) that to grow any business – mine, yours, the competitor’s down the street – simply takes discipline and determination.  It takes doing the basics with ruthless consistency, it takes discipline and courage, and what it doesn’t take is magic dust.

So if you are ready to be a Top Performer in your industry, stop looking for the recipe to the secret sauce – you already know what you need to do.  Simply do more of it consistently over time and you will be up on the stage with the others in no time.
